From the Ocean FM website this morning :

Sligo County Councillors have requested senior executives of the council to provide them with a full report on the Culleenamore controversy by the November meeting of Sligo County Council.

The decision was taken by councillors who attended last night’s meeting of the Culleenamore community group, after the group presented the councillors with their case.

The controversy surrounds the Council’s plan to build a fence at the beach near Strandhill.

Objectors do not want this fence because they say it would block a public right of way that is part of the original road from Ballisodare to Sligo via Strandhill and a popular public amenity.

A spokesperson for the Culleenamore Preservation Group, Seamus May says he hopes this case will not have to go to court..

as a relative of William Barrett, landlord of Culleenamore, I hope this fence was never built. His children who settled in Flinders Island, Tasmania, Australia would never have blocked access to the shores. My life is spent buying land for national parks in Australia and public access is too precious a thing to give away.

    Hi Leonie.

Thanks for getting in contact. Indeed I see that your ancestors papers were used by the local action group – to dissuade the council from what they were trying to do.

I’m not actually aware that the council were successful in their action – but do not see anything online about it.

Some of my own ancestors also went to Australia at the beginning of the 19th century – actually sailed his own ship around the Cape of Good Hope – eventually settling in NSW.
