The good folk in the Strandhill Community Development Association (SCDA) were in contact about their ongoing efforts in the National Tidy Towns Competition.

In an effort to encourage participation from local residents througout the village – there is is going to be a competition with a prize fund of up to €1,000 under categories of best kept estate and the most improved estate.

From the letter to residents sent by SCDA

As you may be aware, the Strandhill Community Development Association (SCDA) re-entered Strandhill into the National Tidy Towns Competition in 2009 following a long absence (1996) . The entry and general work in common areas was completed by a small number of dedicated people last year. In order to encourage participation throughout the village, we are offering prizes for estates that are willing participate in the competition through improvements in their own estate and associated road frontage in the village .

In this regard, we have written to all local businesses seeking a small contribution of €50 to assist with the prize fund in addition to our own sources of funding.

We are hoping to have a prize fund of between €500 and €1,000 available to local resident associations that enter the competition. We hope to give prizes for the best kept estate and the most improved estate.

A member of our committee will be in touch with you in the forthcoming weeks and the closing date for entry is 14th May with adjudication on or before 16th July 2010.

The format of the competition will involve photographic evidence of your area/estate at the time of entry and a brief description of activities/improvements undertaken over the following 8 weeks.

Now there’s a way to start the New Year.

Rory Killian , Coolaney, son in-law of popular Strandhill couple Ollie and Rathana McLaughlin and recently married to Michelle, was astounded when told his ticket had been pulled first in the draw.

‘We are thrilled for Rory and his family and we wish him and all the other prize winners the very best with their prizes. They wouldn’t have won if they hadn’t been prepared to support our drive for badly-needed sports and community facilities in the area. We are so grateful for everyone who bought our tickets and helped our fundraising drive,’ said Cliodhna Carroll of the Sports and Community Centre Group.

Nearly 100 other people won prizes in the mega-draw. After Rory Killian, the top prize winners were: John Tracey, Strandhill (€2,000); Patricia Egan, Strandhill (€1,000 holiday with €500 spending money); Maura Gilligan, Glen Road (flat-screen TV and €100 cash) and Glen Kilfeather, Grange (hotel mini-break and €100 cash).

Cliodhna recently sent me on the promotional material for the fund raising campaign the group are currently running – this is the text.

The Strandhill/Coolera area has one of the fastest rowing populations in the North West and it is stimated that there will be over 2,000 people nder 25 by 2009. We therefore urgently need community and sports facilities to cater for the increasing population, especially for the younger people.

The Sports and Community Centre sub-committee of Strandhill Community Development Association is working to provide state-of-the-art sports facilities and a Community Centre at a site on the Airport Road. We have recently secured agreement from Sligo County Council for a long-term lease on this site.

With support from the community we can develop this area into a wonderful amenity while respecting the scenery and environment.

The objective is to provide a multi-purpose community centre that will cater for indoor sports and changing facilities, youth club activity, drama, gymnastics, dance, childcare, homework clubs, meeting rooms, facilities for older citizens, health, education and library services, along with outdoor soccer & Gaelic playing pitches, all-weather pitch and running track, linked to a network of recreational boardwalks along the dunes.

Now we need your help. We are launching our fundraising drive with a Monster Draw with over €200,000 worth of prizes. By supporting this draw you could win a 2008 luxury car, a 2008 motor home or a leisure/ fishing boat or €40,000 in cash or any of 1,000 other high-quality prizes.

At the same time you will be helping to provide the Strandhill/Coolera region with sports and community facilities to be proud of. All it will cost you is four payments of €25, or €100 once-off payment either by cash, cheque or bankers order to the Strandhill / Coolera Sports and Community Centre Account.

We ask you to support this draw by buying a ticket and by selling tickets to as many other people as possible.

Â
