Potholes on the Airport Road

Did someone see me take these photos or something? This evening – thursday – the potholes have been patched up. Certainly better than it was, but still no great shakes.

In fairness to the council workers – they have been doing much work of late in the Strandhill area; new pavements are being laid in a number of locations – in front of the school, a section leading to Strand Celtic as well as an estate just off the roundabout.

Thing is – it’s a poor as well as dangerous first first impression for any visitors.  Let’s hope resurfacing can happen soon.

Anyone else got any potholes of doom that are worth a mention? Have you rung the council or talked to local councillors about them?

10. TAKING IN CHARGE OF OCEAN LINKS ESTATE, STRANDHILL;

“To ask that Sligo County Council begin the process to Take in Charge the estate Ocean Links in Strandhill”.

In Response Mr J. Murphy SEO stated  the following;

This development consisting of 71 houses at Carrowbunnaun, Strandhill, Co. Sligo is practically completed with a small number of houses remaining to be finished.  There is considerable site works required to bring this development to a satisfactory standard where it can be considered for taking in charge.  The Council has initiated legal proceedings against the developer in respect of his failure to satisfactorily complete this development.  The case was adjourned on a number of occasions and was listed for further hearing at Sligo District Court on 27th November, 2008.  At the hearing, the Solicitor for the developer asked for the case to be adjourned as funds had now been made available to his client to complete the development (letter from Bank was given to the judge).  The solicitor for the Council opposed the adjournment and requested that the case be heard due to the concerns of the residents and the number of adjournments that had already been given.  The judge, however, granted the adjournment to the hearing of Sligo District Court on 12/02/09.  In granting the adjournment he advised the developer’s solicitor that he required a substantial amount of work to be completed by that time.  The matter will be kept under review.  It is therefore not proposed to begin the taking in charge process at this stage.

National School Road Safety

14. HEALTH AND SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN OF STRANDHILL NATIONAL SCHOOL;

“To ask the County Manager, what provisions do Sligo County Council intend to put in place for the health and safety of the children of Strandhill National School regards the access of the school”.

In Response Mr T.  Carroll SE stated the following;

This area is within a 50KM/H speed limit zone.  Two road ramps have been provided along the front of the school which slows down traffic in the area.  There is severe traffic congestion at the school during opening and closing times.  There appears to be no problem at other times.

A pick up / set down area at the school together with traffic management is required to facilitate school traffic.  Sligo County Council prepared designs for a pick up / set down area in front of the school and met the School Principal, Parents Associations Representatives and Councillors with a view to assisting them in solving the problem.

The provision of the pick up / set down facility is the responsibility of the school.  Sligo County Council has no funds at present to do any further works in the area.

This project can be considered in context of 2009 Roadwork’s Programme when being considered at local area electoral meeting in February 2009.

public toilets – not sure who is wasting time here; either the councillors who presumably already  know that “public toilets” have been notionally available at the sea front for the last 9 years or so and are this mischief making, or council powers that be – that deem it unimportant to ensure that signage makes the public aware of this fact….this is silly buggers stuff.

The toilets in the maritime centre are public toilets.  At the time the maritime centre was built in Strandhill, a decision was made, and agreed by the County Council and the Community Development Association that the public toilets would be demolished in the public car park and provided instead, downstairs in the maritime centre.  It was agreed that improved signage would be provided.

“To ask the County Manager; that this Council seek to provide a playground for Strandhill village”.

In Response Mr M. Carty SEE stated the following;

“Sligo County Council is in dialogue with the Strandhill/Coolera Sports and Community Development Group to achieve dedicated facilities for the area.  Playground facilities can be considered as part of the proposal.  Currently no Council funding has been allocated for such a facility”.

Ms R. McNulty, DOS stated that grants were no longer available for the provision of playgrounds and that local action would be helpful in relation to the provision of a site.

So easing back into it – here is the only minuted item from the last ordinary meeting of the county council back in June – relating to Strandhill – back in June.

21. REPORT ON THE ROADWORKS SCHEME IN STRANDHILL;

“To request a report on the Roadworks scheme in Strandhill, including Urgent works on the Upper Road and the upgrading of footpaths from the church to the promenade”.

In Response Mr T. Carroll SE stated the following;

A sum of €88,400 has been provided in estimates 2008 towards the upgrade of Buenos Aires Drive (L-3505) under Road Restoration Programme. A sum of €45,500 has also been provided towards the continued upgrade of footpath network on Top Road R292 in 2008. Repairs where required will be undertaken to footpaths from Church to Promenade.

Interestingly, no mention at all of proposed bye-law for “parking charges”. I would have naively thought that given this first hit the papers in early July – a knowledge of the issue would have been known at the time?

Can anyone out there educate readers on the the mechanism by which bye-laws are actually conceived, deliberated, discussed and agreed? I’ve had a brief look at the council website – it may be buried in there somewhere, but nothing obvious…

The Sligo Arts eBulletin for February (download here) lists a range of ‘Calls for Applications’ for grants and bursary opportunities from the Sligo Arts Department, The Arts Council and others, that are relevant for individual artists as well as groups.
