Sligo County Fleadh 2011 in Strandhill

Strandhill is privileged to the have the Sligo County Fleadh 2011 on this June weekend from Friday June 3rd until Sunday June 5th

Although not mentioned on Comhaltas – all competitions are in Scoil Asicus National School – on the golf course road, turn left at the local church in the village.

Save the Cordylines damaged by last winters frost

As a seaside village, Strandhill has an awful lot of cordylines but they have been badly hit this winter. Coming into the middle of april and most people are now looking to their gardens – can you save the cordyline and have it for years to come?According to an article in last weekends Irish Times – you do have a chance. The key tips given in the article – to cut back to the point where it has not been mushed up by the frost – we’ve only seen done to just one plant in the village – in front of the Bella Vista;

While the article does warn that the work should not be done until May – guessing that anytime now should be fine.

Review of opening addresses by Candidates in Sligo North Leitrim at The Big Ticket event

Here are my notes from the initial 3 minute pitches that each Sligo North Leitrim candidate gave at the Big Ticket event in the Clarion last night 16th February.

Well done to the organisers of this superbly run event - Sligo Today and David Lenehan – and to all the sponsors.

I recorded my points and comments on the basis of how the speaker sounded and felt for these 3 minutes, and not by their subsequent performance to questions from the selected groups and from the audience.

I’ve also noted whether they read from a script, used speaker notes or had no speaker notes.

Candidates are listed in the order in which they spoke.

1.Susan O’Keefe (Labour)

No speaker notes. A little nervous. Slow, deliberate delivery. “The Future, Our Children” was the main theme. No articulation of a vision for the future, aspirational. Not a bad start though.

2. Marc McSharry (Fianna Fail)

Some notes. Themes of children/family and political failure. Sounded like an independent.

3. Michael Colreavy (Sinn Fein)

No notes. Theme was economy + FF mismanagment. best line – “I’m not a politician, I’m a community representative. hmmm.

4. Declan Bree (Independent)

Full Script. Channelling anger of the public big time – by attacking party politics – surprise, surprise. Too much detail, too many messages.

5. Tony McLoughlin (FG)

Full Script. 3 minute guide to FG 5 point plan. too much detail – spoke to fast.

6. Eamon Scanlon (Fianna Fail)

No notes. This was hold my hands up time, apologetic, sympathetic, said “sorry”. Looked resigned and a bit deflated.

7. Veronica Cawley (Independent)

No notes. More channneling of public discontent here – but done well by and large. Very simple language. No policy discussed, but used the words “trust” and “trustworthy”

8. Michael Clarke (Independent)

No Notes. First to raise SGH as issue, followed by Jobs, transport, abortion referendum (??), water (being owned by German companies).

9. Alwyn Love (Independent)

Full Script. Full onslaught on party politics, reform required, and the at the time amusing use of the phrase “Use the Power”.

10. John Perry (Fine Gael)

No notes – but needed them. Theme was jobs. Talked about being totally clear, but was, of all speakers – giving a totally incoherent message.

11. Gabriel McSharry (Independent)

No notes. Theme was family and party politics failure, SGH. visibly passionate.

12. Johnny Gogan (Green Party)

No notes. Talked about himself and his background. Unless you were a creative – you might have felt left out of this. Theme was renewable, green jobs. apologised for banking bailout.

13. Dick Cahill (Independent)

Some notes. Fear & Anger of the people. first to mention sovereign debt.

Free show for Kids this Sunday 25th July in Sligo

I don’t normally post things un-Strandhill related here – but this Sunday, 25th July from 1pm to 3pm – there will be a free show featuring

Death-Defying Trapeze, Back Cracking Contortion, Jaw Dropping Acrobatics, Fearless Aerial Feats, Giant Ball Juggling and Live Musical Mayhem…may all your days be circus days!

Yup – sounds like fun alright. All of this mayhem is for the launch of the free summer programme of weekend workshops for kids – all organised by The Model. Went to some of the things they did last Summer – and they were very good.

Tidy Towns judging date approaches

As the Tidy Towns Judging approaches we would like to ask all residents to make a special effort around their homes and outside gates to keep the area tidy & clear of weeds etc.

The Tidy Towns judging takes place in July & Aug so would like to get Strandhill looking as tidy & colourful as possible with flowers, shrubs and planting.

We are going to meet on Tuesday 29th June from 7-9pm in the Main Car park.

All help will be gratefully received – even if you can only spare 1/2 an hour all time will be put to good use. Bags, gloves & litter pickers will be available.

Competition for local Estates as part of Tidy Towns drive

The good folk in the Strandhill Community Development Association (SCDA) were in contact about their ongoing efforts in the National Tidy Towns Competition.

In an effort to encourage participation from local residents througout the village – there is is going to be a competition with a prize fund of up to €1,000 under categories of best kept estate and the most improved estate.

From the letter to residents sent by SCDA

As you may be aware, the Strandhill Community Development Association (SCDA) re-entered Strandhill into the National Tidy Towns Competition in 2009 following a long absence (1996) . The entry and general work in common areas was completed by a small number of dedicated people last year. In order to encourage participation throughout the village, we are offering prizes for estates that are willing participate in the competition through improvements in their own estate and associated road frontage in the village .

In this regard, we have written to all local businesses seeking a small contribution of €50 to assist with the prize fund in addition to our own sources of funding.

We are hoping to have a prize fund of between €500 and €1,000 available to local resident associations that enter the competition. We hope to give prizes for the best kept estate and the most improved estate.

A member of our committee will be in touch with you in the forthcoming weeks and the closing date for entry is 14th May with adjudication on or before 16th July 2010.

The format of the competition will involve photographic evidence of your area/estate at the time of entry and a brief description of activities/improvements undertaken over the following 8 weeks.

Incidents of unlocked cars being burgled in the Strandhill area

We mentioned on Twitter a few weeks back that there a number of incidents of cars having their contents rifled through. This was on sunday night/monday morning of the 15th March. We know of 2 incidents that were reported to the Gardai – both just off the top road.

More incidents have also been reported from Monday night last – 5th April – in a number of locations just off the Strandhill Road; Again – the modus operandi seems to be to go for unlocked vehicles in search of cash. Valuables do not appear to be of an interest to these people.

So if you are in the habit of leaving your car unlocked at night – this might convince you to think otherwise. What makes this rather nasty is the fact that whoever is responsible clearly knows the area and is very calmly checking cars that are unalaramed/unlocked. A serious case of neck – let’s hope the Gardai can nip this in the bud quickly – if you have seen anything suspicious, you should call Sligo Gardai at 071- 915 7000.
